The Fox and the Grapes
One hot day a hungry fox came into a garden and saw a bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a high vine. They were purple and heavy, and the sight of them made his mouth water. He backed away, took a run and jumped. He missed. He tried again, and again, jumping higher each time, until his legs ached and his breath came in gasps. The grapes still hung where they had always hung. At last the fox walked away with his nose in the air. “I did not want them anyway,” he said to himself. “I am quite sure they were sour.”

The Hare and the Tortoise
The hare was for ever boasting about how fast he could run. One day the tortoise grew tired of listening and said quietly, “I will race you to the old banyan tree.” Every animal in the wood came to watch. The hare shot ahead and was soon out of sight. Halfway there he looked back, saw no one at all, and thought, “I have time to spare.” He lay down under a bush and fell fast asleep. The tortoise never stopped. Step after slow step he came along the path, past the sleeping hare and on to the banyan tree. The cheering woke the hare. He ran as he had never run before, but the tortoise was already there.
Who suggested the race?

The Milkmaid and Her Pail
A milkmaid was walking to the market with a pail of milk balanced on her head. As she walked, she began to plan. “With the money from this milk I shall buy a dozen eggs,” she said to herself. “The eggs will hatch into chicks, the chicks will grow into hens, and the hens will lay more eggs than I can count. With that money I shall buy a fine silk shawl, and when I wear it to the fair everyone will turn to look at me. And if any boy asks me to dance, I shall toss my head — like this!” She tossed her head. The pail slid off, the milk ran away between the stones of the road, and with it went the eggs, the hens and the silk shawl.
How did the milkmaid feel while she was making her plans?

The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf
A shepherd boy took his master's sheep to graze on the hillside every day. The hours passed slowly and he grew bored, so one afternoon he thought of a game. He ran down towards the village shouting, “Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is eating the sheep!” The villagers dropped their work and ran up the hill with sticks. They found no wolf at all, only the boy laughing at them. A few days later he played the same trick, and again the villagers came running for nothing. Then one evening a wolf really did come out of the wood and slip in among the flock. The boy shouted with all his might, but the villagers only shook their heads and said, “He is playing his game again.” Nobody came, and the wolf did as it pleased.
