Village Lights Up After Ten Years
MADHAVPUR, 3 March — For the first time in a decade the street lamps of this hill village came on at dusk yesterday, powered by a solar array set up on the roof of the panchayat office. The village had been connected to the grid in 2014, but the line down the valley was cut by a landslide two years later and never fully repaired. Households managed with kerosene lamps and a few small generators. The new array carries forty panels and a bank of batteries, and was installed over five weeks by a team of eight, four of them from the village itself. It powers the street lamps, the health centre and the primary school. “The children can read after seven o'clock now,” said the head teacher. The panchayat says a second array is planned for the far end of the village before the monsoon.
