SOF IMO Class 1: syllabus, paper pattern and sample questions

The SOF International Mathematics Olympiad for Class 1 is a 60-minute paper of 35 questions for 40 marks in 4 sections. Every question has four options and one right answer. The last 5 questions are the Achievers Section, worth 2 marks each. Below: how the paper is set out, the 8 chapters it draws on, one sample question from each section with its answer, and how to practise it for free.

Paper pattern

Syllabus: the 8 chapters

Every question on the paper belongs to one of these chapters. On Sprinto's map each chapter is an island, and the Achievers Section is the same chapters asked harder — not a separate topic.

  1. 1.Numbers and Number NamesSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Number Bay" on the map
  2. 2.Addition and SubtractionSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Adding Anchor" on the map
  3. 3.Lengths, Weights and ComparisonsSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Measure Cove" on the map
  4. 4.Time and MoneySections 2, 3 and 4 · "Clock Harbour" on the map

Sample questions with answers

One from each section, taken from Sprinto's own bank for IMO Class 1. In the app the numbers, names and figures are different every time; these are fixed so you can read them.

  1. Sample 1 · Section 1: Logical Reasoning · Analogy, Ranking and Spatial Sense

Which shape is just to the left of the circle?

    left → rightleft → right

    Answer: (D)

Find the circle first, then look one step to the left. That is the rectangle.

  2. Sample 2 · Section 2: Mathematical Reasoning · Patterns

Which one comes next in the pattern?

    Pattern?

    Answer: (C)

The pattern goes big, small, big, small. After a big one comes a small one.

  3. Sample 3 · Section 3: Everyday Mathematics · Time and Money

Which purse holds the same amount as ₹ 15?

    Answer: (B)

    1 note of ₹ 10 is ₹ 10, and 1 coin of ₹ 5 is ₹ 5. Together that is ₹ 15.

  4. Sample 4 · Section 4: Achievers Section · Analogy, Ranking and Spatial Sense · Achievers difficulty

How many rectangles are there in this figure? Count the big ones too.

    Figure

    Answer: (C) 10

The lines cut the big rectangle into 4 small ones. Joining neighbours makes more: 10 rectangles in all.

How to practise IMO Class 1 on Sprinto

  • One island per chapter. A hidden rating per chapter picks the next maths question at the difficulty that is just hard enough today.
  • Mistakes come back. Anything she gets wrong returns a few days later, then a week, then a month, until it stops being a mistake.
  • Mock tests in the real shape. 35 questions, 4 sections, 60 minutes, marked the moment she hands it in.
  • Papers you can print. A full IMO Class 1 paper with an OMR sheet, sat at the table with a pencil.
