SOF IMO Class 3: syllabus, paper pattern and sample questions

The SOF International Mathematics Olympiad for Class 3 is a 60-minute paper of 35 questions for 40 marks in 4 sections. Every question has four options and one right answer. The last 5 questions are the Achievers Section, worth 2 marks each. Below: how the paper is set out, the 10 chapters it draws on, one sample question from each section with its answer, and how to practise it for free.

Paper pattern

Syllabus: the 10 chapters

Every question on the paper belongs to one of these chapters. On Sprinto's map each chapter is an island, and the Achievers Section is the same chapters asked harder — not a separate topic.

  1. 1.Number Sense — 4-digit numbersSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Number Bay" on the map
  2. 2.Computation OperationsSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Adding Anchor" on the map
  3. 3.FractionsSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Fraction Falls" on the map
  4. 4.Length, Weight, Capacity and TemperatureSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Measure Cove" on the map

Sample questions with answers

One from each section, taken from Sprinto's own bank for IMO Class 3. In the app the numbers, names and figures are different every time; these are fixed so you can read them.

  1. Sample 1 · Section 1: Logical Reasoning · Verbal Reasoning — alphabet, coding, ranking

16 children are standing in a line. Aarav is 9th from the front. What is Aarav's position from the back?

    Answer: (B) 8th

    There are 16 children in all, so counting from the back: 16 − 9 + 1 = 8.

  2. Sample 2 · Section 2: Mathematical Reasoning · Number Sense — 4-digit numbers

Which number comes just before 6,993?

    Answer: (C) 6,992

One less than 6,993 is 6,992.

  3. Sample 3 · Section 3: Everyday Mathematics · Time, Money and Calendar

A bus leaves at 7:35 and the journey takes 3 hours 25 minutes. At what time does the bus reach its stop?

    Answer: (C) 11:00

Add the hours first: 7:35 + 3 hours is 10:35. Then add 25 minutes to reach 11:00.

  4. Sample 4 · Section 4: Achievers Section · Geometry — Shapes and Solids · Achievers difficulty

The perimeter of a rectangle is 92 cm and its length is 25 cm. What is its width?

    Answer: (A) 21 cm

Half the perimeter is one length plus one width: 92 ÷ 2 = 46 cm. Taking the length away, the width is 46 − 25 = 21 cm.

How to practise IMO Class 3 on Sprinto

  • One island per chapter. A hidden rating per chapter picks the next maths question at the difficulty that is just hard enough today.
  • Mistakes come back. Anything she gets wrong returns a few days later, then a week, then a month, until it stops being a mistake.
  • Mock tests in the real shape. 35 questions, 4 sections, 60 minutes, marked the moment she hands it in.
  • Papers you can print. A full IMO Class 3 paper with an OMR sheet, sat at the table with a pencil.
